Promoting circulation and vitality
Gua sha is an ancient therapy that has been used for thousands of years. It involves the use of a special tool, such as a jade stone or a smooth-edged instrument, to scrape the skin in repeated even strokes over a lubricated area. This scraping may be used to relieve pain and improve range of motion, reduce inflammation, or stimulate the immune system, and promote the body’s natural healing process.
“Gua” means to scrape, and “sha” refers to the therapeutic small red dots, or petechiae that appear on the skin during a gua sha session. The sha is a sign of stagnant or toxic intercellular fluids from deep within the body being drawn to the surface. This allows fresh, oxygenated, nutrient rich fluids to take it’s place, reducing inflammation and accelerating healing and regeneration in the organs and muscles. Gua sha can have an immediate effect on coughing and wheezing by reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract. Sha typically disappears within a few days and the color and rate of fading can indicate important information about the condition of the patient.
By increasing blood flow and promoting the body’s natural healing process, Gua sha can also help to reduce tension and promote a sense of relaxation and reduce stress. It has been shown to be effective in treating conditions such as anxiety and depression.
“If there is stagnation, there will be pain. If there is no stagnation, there will be no pain.”
